DANIELS’ MYSTERY

EXCITEMENT INCREASING NO NEW DEVELOPMENTS. FRENCH POLICE INVESTIGATION*' BY CABI.i!—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPY BIGHT Received 10.40 a.m. to-day. LONDON, March 12. Many London newspapers have sent correspondents to Boulogne to deal with the mystery of the death of Nurse Daniels, all report increasing excitement daily. A stream of witnesses are offering statements to the police. The- only concrete development to-day is the French magistrate ; s formal request to Nurse McCarthy, sent through Scotland Yard, to attend and give evb; deuce on March 18. Miss McCarthy is undecided whether to go. The “ Sunday News ’ ’ quotes ' the magistrate who is conducting the case as saying: “We have a pretty shrewd idea of what happened. The mystery is already solved and we only need witnesses. We arei exerting all the force of French justice and will not let the murderers escape from us.” The special correspondent of the “News of the World” asserts, however, that the French police are now convinced that Nurse Daniels was accustomed to drugs and died from an overdose. LONDON, March 11. It is hinted that new police inquiries at Boulogne may be responsible tor developments in the Daniels mystery. They are endeavouring to trace a ship’s officer who is alleged to have been seen at Boulogne in company with Nurse Daniels. Thus far it seems established that she was alive at noon on the day following the departure of the steamer which she intended to catch. In view of doubts as to the identity of the body, to which Nurse (McCarthy lias contributed by saying she does not think it is of Nurse Daniels, exhumation is likely. . In the meantime the Magistrate in charge of the investigations has made no comment on Nurse McCarthy’s refusal to'go to Boulogne, beyond insisting that her presence is indispensable to a thorough investigation.
