Pi fly years ago there, was a toll-gate at the top of the Henui Hill in Devon Street, at the Watson Street intersection (says the "Taranaki Herald”.. The civic authorities of that day attached such importance to it that, when the newly-formed county council proposed to remove it to Smart lioad they placed four men on guard for a few days to prevent its forcible removal. However, a little later the toll-gate keeper was roused one morning by a noise, and on investigating found that a contractor and eight men had been busy very early and had already removed the gate and posts, and were preparing to remove the fence and the house. The Mayor was sent for and he gave orders for another gate to be erected. This was done, but a .month later, after an interview with Major Atkinson, it was decided to abolish the gate.
