Charles William Hayes, described as a dangerous criminal from Australia, wno was always resorting to extreme Violence wmenever arrested, was sentenced at Old Bai.ey to tai years’ penal serivtude for possessing a loaded automatic pistol, with intent to endanger life.
A detective gave evidence that a flying squad tender containing sx police omcem located a gang, including Hayes, at Newoross road. A long ana violent ! struggle ensued, in w'hicli Hayes struck the witness on the jaw. When ultimately pinioned, Hayes said: ‘T will go quietly,” but immediately lie was allowed to" stand uu, he pu led out an automatic pistol from his trouser pocket, and only the promptitude of the* tender’s driver dn truncheoning Hayes on the head prevented a casualty.
