The night firing competitions resulted as follows; — Hotchkiss Gun and Rifle Section.— Ist M.R. (Cyc.), 540t5., £8; Bth M.R, (Blenheim). 43, £4; 6th M.R, (Manawatu) 37. £4. Lewis Gun and Rifle section. Ist Battalion Wehlngton Regt 63pts. £8; Ist Battalion North Auckland Regt., 58, £6; Ist Battalion Hawke s Bay Regt., 54, £4; Ist Battalion Wellington "West Coast Regt. , 52, £2. ’’Phis competition nroduced some remarkable scores. A Hotchkiss warn starting with 170 rounds returned. 68 unused, so their percentage of hits worked out at 53. A Lewis gun team used 190 out of 201 rounds, registering 63 hits, or 32 per cent. This was undoubtedly due to the fact that Hotchkiss fire is of a more dispersive character while the Lewis fire is dead in ” so that if a firer does not get on the target right away the big part ol his magazine will go harmlessly past the “enemv.” The Verey lights illumination. does not last long enough to make manv corrections in aim. Very heavy rain fell this morning for several hours, but cleared up, so* that team shooting was able to proceed with only an occasional drizzle -to annoy the competitors.
