NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.’’j Inferno is a, surprise nomination for the ihurdle races at the Rangitikei meeting. As usual, the Taranaki stables are well irepiesented at the Itangitikei meeting, and no doubt, as in the' past, will go' far towards making the gathering a success. Jazz Baby continues to race most consistently, and considering the number of races under big weights, his form is surprising. *He won .decisively at Dannevirke and, no doubt, will develop into a good horse with age. Old Golden Glow, formerly trained by J. Fryer, at Hawera, was sold .in the Wailoatoi .last week lbr eleven shillings. That once good stake earner, Marquerteur, who is now pensioned off near Paten, recently got foul of a wire fence, and sustained a badly lacerated leg. Usually this . province is strongly represented af the Wellington meeting, but for the coining gathering at Trenthniin few Taranaki stables are represented. No doubt the smaller meeting at O'punako appeals more these times. As a rule, meetings held in the Auckland province are free of judicial enquiries. but the recent meeting; held at To Arolia was an exception, several being held. In these days of financial stress,, it appears ludicrous' for towns of limited populations like Nelson. , and Greymouth, to hold race meetings extending over three days. Two days is ample for such towns and clubs. After many attempts, the well bred Grand National (Martion-Amber and White) managed to wan a divisional race at Dannevirke, but lie was lucky to beat- Royal Lineage. Henna, who' showed good form' to win a division race .at. Dannevirke last Wednesday, is bred on lines that should carry her past hack • class. Henna was sired by Kilbro-ney from, the once useful Ivandioap performer Lady Louisa. . , When the Biisogne gelding Rising Star won at the recent Wanganui meeting liis finishing run .suggested better things. At Dannevirke last Wednesday Tie fulfilled such expectations by

beating Capitulation very easily. The secretary of the Racing Conference recently received a letter from the secretary of the Straits Settlement Racing Association, i.stating that the association were anxious to- secure the services of ia. good starter, and are offering 750 dollars (£B7) per calendar month plus 20 dollars a day allowances.

Although the field for the Dannevirke Cup was weak in class (the winner excepted) Jlynanna registered a fine performance for a three-year-old, in carrying 9.8 to win in 2.6 (. As Hynanna has improved, considerably of late, he appears to be the one most capable of giving Commendation a race, in the autumn classics. It is wonderful how some' horses will suddenly improve. For a considerable time, Lady Ideal was not capable of winning a “scurry,” and even as late as a few weeks ago was not able to succeed against good “hacks” or even run out a moderate six furlongs, yet at the Dannevirke meeting last Wednesday, Lady Ideal beat very easily, ia. very usefull lot of sprinters in the “open’.’ si x furlongs handicap. During the presentation of- a trophy at the recent meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., rightly touched on the excessive taxation imposed on those who patronise racing, for business or for pleasure. During the course of his remarks the speaker stated that unless some relief from such taxation were granted the smaller clubs, many will he forced to relinguish the sport-. This- would mean a big loss in taxation.

Many -were anticipating a meeting •between Commendation and Limerick in some of the weight for age -races to be decided in the near future, hut as Limerick is hooked to- leave for Australia, such a contest is impossible. Evidently trainer F. D. Jones arrived at the conclusion that Commendation would at least take just as much beating as Australia’s best three-year-old. At the time just prior to -distributing the additional racing and trotting, permits, every village in the Dominion were anxious to isecure' one of the extra Affairs published his list of successful permits. When the Minister of Internal applicants, it caused .wonderment and even dismay, the opinion being held by some that the Minister would have done better bad he been guided by the Racing Conference. Now, after a fair trial, it is very evident that many of the successful applicants have bitten off more than they can chew. Indeed, ksome of those clubs granted permits have nob yet been able to hold a meeting. while others have not complied with the eonditibn accompanying the permits, and are holding on to such permits' under a special dispensation. Under ore-sent conditions it is .almost impossible for a young club to .succeed.
