THE BAND. Laei week was the week of weeks tor the members of the Hawera Municipal Band, for they have had what was. to most of them, their flush baptism in band competitions, it must have been a wonderful experience, and should be, if they have been observant, a remarkable education. Though they did not secure’ any firsts, they came through with credit, and the judge’s remarks on the band’<» playing were very satisfactoiv. Hawera Band has nothing of which* to be- ashamed.
The opinion of experienced players who have been to many contests, was that this was the best contest they had ever attended. This is the opinion of Air Olkieushaw and Mr Robinson. Mr Oilcren«haw. who was not ah<e to move about much, and consequently heard a great deal of the work, said he considered the standard all round was very high, and ( that actually the B grad_. in comparison with A, had a higher general standard. He considered the performances were remarkably close, and that the- band winning had to play exceptionally well.
MALE CHOIR. Pfectice bv members of the Alale Choir •has been going on very well and quieb’y, but not the,.less effectively under the recently-appointed deputy - conductor, Mr C. Lamb. They have several good works in hand, and are making good progress. Air Fox will soon be ready to take them in hand again. ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY. A similar position is reached by the Orchestral l Society under Air A. G. Barley, the popular deputy. . Alucli good work is also being tie no. SCHOLARSHIP WINNER. The best wishes of all musical people will go with Aliss Leah Haugliton on her great adventure into the rea’ans of music. All will be interested to hear of her progress. PERSONAL. An addition to the .ranks of musical people of the district is Allss Kathleen who fives at. Manutalii. Aliss Fairhalj wa* born at Hawera, where her parents resided for some years, and where her mother was known as a leading musician. She assisted the Orchestral Society in their last concert of 1926 as a violinist, but she is fonder of the piano, and lias arranged to play a concerto with orchestra 1 , accompaniment at the first concert this year.
CHORISTERS VISIT CANADA. The gentlemen of St. George’s Chapel Choir. AVindsor Castle, together witn 12 of the choristers of Westminster Abbey, are now on a tour in Canada. They are accompanied by the. Dean of Windsor, Dr. E. H. Fell owe*, director of the choir of St. George’s Chapel, and •Mr Sydney Nicholson, organist, and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey. The party are clue back at Southampton on March 24. The tour is entirely an educational one, and the choir wifi be the guests of the National Council of Education of Canada. They are taking part, in service* and concerts. Air Nicholson is the musical head of the Bov Scout movement. The choristers of Westminister Abbev who are going out are Boy Scouts.- and took the* .scout uniforms with them. As there is a double .shift of choir boys at Westminster Abbey, the services there will he maintained a.s usual during the tour. PLEA FOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Speaking recently in Ale. 1 bourne, alter a tour of the States, Mr Alfred Hill, of the Conse.rvatorium of Music, Sydney, .said: —“We in Australia spend lots of money on horses and sport of other kinds— all very welt in. their way but we: do not .pay enough . attention to music. In Sydney a combination oi 150 citizen*, prepared to spend some money, could provide the city with a symphony orchestra. Unfortunately, we have not- started such a. movement. W ? must have culture and to have culture we must have music.”
