Tli© following remit .dealing with migration was carried at the Christchurch conference of the National Council of Women: “That the Council is of- opinion, that while an increased population of a healthy and suitable type is> necessary for the advancement of New Zealand, the Government should not urge increased 1 immigration without making provision to absorb the immigrants by adequate housing and suitable employment.” Other remits carried •were: “That the Government be urged to pass an Order-in-Council under the Child Welfare Act better to regulate and restrict the attendance of children at places of amusement. “That the Government be urged to consider measures of better protection for British films.” “That the Council that the cost of primary products such as butter, milk, fruit, and. vegetables is beyond the means of a large proportion o.f the public, and that the cause of this high cost be investigated.” “That the_ council, .regarding the habit of smoking &s a growing evil among the youth of New Zealand, appeals to the 'Government to prohibit the .sale of tobacco to persons under 18 years of age.” Two hawks were shot recently on a dairy farm near Waitara, and on examinations afterwards it was found that one was feeding on n stoat it had captured and the other on a weasel. It is understood,,says the “Tarnnaki Herald,” that hawks do not generally tackle stoats or weasels, and the question arises that if-they are going to feed on them is it wise to destroy the hawks?
