“FACE-LIFTING” FALLS TEARS AND WRINKLES LONDON, FEb. 27. On .the resumption ofthe hearing of the case in which Miss Clara "Vernon is claiming damages from the Hystogen Institute, a, West End beauty establishment, in connection with a “face-lifting” operation that proved a failure, Carl Willi, a naturalised Swiss and the proprietor of the “institute,” admitted that he had been fined £2O in 1921 for describing himself as a doctor when ho possessed only an American degree, obtained by writing a dissertation to students of an American Univerity and giving £5 to the building fund. He declared that he had dismissed Miss Vernon because she was assisting his former partner, who had started an opposition business. Miss Vernon had asked for the operation for removal of wrinkles due to excessive weeping over the death of her mother. He added that a young woman weeping continually for a week, might be permanently wrinkled.
