PEOPLE’S DAY. MORE SOUTH TARANAKI AWARDS To all intents and purposes, People’s Day of the Taranaki Agricultural Society’s 51st annual show yetserday at Waiwakaiho, New Plymouth, wa.s practically doomed up till about 10.30 a.m., when th'e rain ceased and weather conditions generally improved. Though overcast and slightly muggy thereafter, it remained fine. The visit of the Duke and Duchess of York in the morning diUw a vast crowd from all quarters of the province, and it seemed that all the visitors had resolved to make a day of it and remain to see the show. The result was a record attendance. During the progress of the jumpng competitions and other equally interesting ring events, the' entire circle was densel" packed with an appreciative audience. _ \ The grand parade of prize-winning show s+°"k headed hv the New Plymouth Pino Band, presented a truly magnificent spectacle. It is irarely, : f ever that such an imposing array of Ayrshire and Jersey cattle, has been presented to the public, while the reerese nta t i yes of other isections were verv little behind them in point of excellence. The presence of a number of the best North Island show ring performers created much interest in the jumping competition, in which excellent form and ability were displayed. During the dnv a successful sale of show exhibits in' the pig section was ronducted hv Messrs Newton King Ltd., at which eminently .satisfactory prices were realised. Further South Taranaki successes were as follow: — HORSES.
In the draught section, George C. Reid, of Eltham, secured a first award and championship, with the entire Baron Newton. H. Edgar’s (Nolantown) Prince Douglas was placed second in the four-year and over entire class. Among carriage horses and hacks, J. Barraclough’s (Eltliam’) Dick secured a first and second award in the harness horse and farmers’ light harness horse classes. Competition was keen in . the pony ruction, and am one the prizewinners were Miss E. Harrison’s (Hawera) Bunks first, and G. Kerrisk’s (Ohangai) Ruebov and C. Paterson’s (Kapuni) Flora each second. The latter was also successful in the competitions, his hois:s Glen Royal and King Dick securing first and. second in the interprovincial hunters’ competition. A.- H. Mercer’s (Paten) Gilgai secured two first awards. Other South Taranaki prize winners were G. Kerrisk’s Blu~liov first, and F. \V. Atkins’ (Norm a.mLv) Prince Paid, first, and Bonita second. Clarence Atkins, of Normanby, secured the awards for best boy rider and best burr-back rider. CATTLE. Among the .)erseys, P. Skousgaard, of Douglas, was successful, his yearling bull Linden Grove Silver King securing a first and second award. SHEEP. In Southdown classes, A. A.. Yerry (Waitotara) was awarded a championship, two firsts, three seconds and one third prize. . . During the two days demonstrations lectures have been given by representatives of the Jersey, Friesian, Ayrshire Cattle and Romney Marsh Sheep Breed Societies. Mr. F. Mills, of Hawera, spoke for the Ayrshire breedPOINTS PRIZE. In Pedigree Friesians, C. IV. Baldwin and Sons (Inglewood) won the I2gn trophy .presented by Mr A. A. Ward for most, ".points. Previous winners were: 1920, A. 11. Street (Bell Block); 1921, A. 11. Street; 1932, H. W. Hoskin; 1923. G. A. Marchant and Sons (Cardiff); 1924, H. W. Hoskin; 1920, H. E. Johnson (Tokaora). C. W. Baldwin also wins the New Zealand Friesian Association points medal.
In Pedigree Ayrsliires, W. Hall (Leppevton) won the society’s lOgn. tropliy, scoring 52 points against F. Mills’ 46, the latter having won it the two previous years.
H." C. Sampson won the points prize, valued at £lO 10s, for most points in the pedigree Jerseys. Previous winners were: 11. C. Sampson, 1924; R. L. Horn, 1926.
