GIRL GUIDES.

BROWNIE FLEDGING PARTY

Tlie Brownie headquarters in the Winter Show Buildings was the scene of a party on Saturday, when Guides, Brownies, and members of the local association met together for thei purpose of witnessing the “hedging” ceremony in which Brownies who have reached the Guide age say good-bye to the pack and join the Guide company. The three Brownies who played their part in, the good-bye ceremony and were welcomed into the Guides were Alison Kemp, Betty Pinson, and Elsie Smith. After the “fledging” ceremony a grave note was struck by an enrolment of four Guides by their respective captains. The four recruits who made the .solemn promise were Peggy Yenrbury, lb oris Jones, Doris Ingham, and Yadney Lord. Guides and Brownies then squatted round a realistic campfire, when campfire songs were sang under the leadership of Miss Ballantine. Other items were recitations by Patrol Leader Myra Jackson and Brownie Eila Gunderson. and a song by Brownie Rhoda Watson. A pretty Australian fairy story was told by Mrs L. C. H. Barbour, who was listened to with rapt attention ; and a Russian dance in costume was delightfully Interpreted by Mary Bright and Alma Conway. Before refreshments were served Mrs R. R. Henderson announced that the Ist Hawera Company had been presented with a flag by Mrs M. Hooper, Tokaora, and this announcement was followed by one from Miss Ballantine to the effect that tbe 2nd Hawera Company had also been presented with a flag by the president. Mrs E. A. Paeev. Cheers were given for the generous donors of the flags iShort speeches followed by the president, district commissioner, and Guide captains, and a happy afternoon was brought to a close with the, singing of the Guide evening song “Taps” and the National Anthem. RANGER. INAUGURAL EVENING. In response to the president’s invitation. a number of enthusiastic girls assembled at Airs E. A. Paoev’s residence on Thursday evening to meet the prospective captain of the Rangers, All’s L. C. H. Barbour. A jolly evening was spent in novel games, and after supper the formation of the company was discussed. Airs Barbour, in a brief and lucid speech, outlined the ideals and uses of such a company, and gave a resume of some of the activities of Rangers. vShe then invited those who were' desirous' of forming the company to band ini their names. It was decided to bold the first meeting on Thursdav evening, Ala,reh I°. For the information of intending Rangers who could' not be present on tbe inaugural night, the president has offered the use of a, room in her home for meetings until a, club room can be obtained. The Ranger captain is anxious to obtain a- room in a central position, and it is hoped that through tbe generosity of tbe citizeits of Hawera a headquarters will lie obtained. Since the inception of Guiding in this town tjic_ local executive has met with unfailing kindness from the townspeople, and should any public-spirited citizen have a room which could be offered to the new company it would be greatly appreciated.
