ELECTIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA.
FOR PROVINCIAL COUNCILS. TREND OF THE VOTING. BY GABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received 12.15 p.m. to-day. CAPETOWN, Feb. 17. The elections of the Provincial Councils, which was fought on the same voters’ roil as that for the Assembly elections, is progressing, and while the duel between the Nationals and the South African Party in the rural areas shows no decisive trend, the Labourites suffered severely, losing ten .seats to the South Afgriean, Party, and being practically wiped out in Natal, while the number of so-called Independents, who generally supported the Government, lost their seats.
On the whole, the present position has been maintained in the rural constituencies. hut the urban centres, where Labour is naturally the strongest, show a definite set against the Government, with the exception of Witswater.srand. On the whole, the voters appeared to be apathetic. A feature of the campaign lias been the unusual appearance of Cabinet Ministers in the fray, -showing the importance attached to the. result by the Government.
