In the House of Commons, replying to a- question why the recent Army tinned meat contract was given to Argentina, Sir Laming WorthingtonEvans (Minister of War) said that two Empire tenders, respectively 26 and 45 per cent above that accepted, consequently they were, prohibitive, even after "allowing for the preference normally given. Hie Government was anxious to obtain Empire meat, but there was a limit to what could be paid in the form of preference'. Neither 26 nor 4,5 per cent dearer permitted the contract to be given to the Empire. _____
