CORRESPONDENCE.
RAILWAY TRUCKING YARDS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —How long are the people who live in close proximity to the Hawera railway station to put up with the disgusting odour arising from sheep and pigs trucked from the yards? ■ If a private person or firm committed the same offence the health officer, inspector, and Borough Council would be on their track and see that the nuisance was ended. As it is the Government which is responsible for this state, of things, it is tolerated. Last evening the stench was so strong that it was noticeable as soon as one got to Hodder and Tolley’s store. The night was hot enough to have all windows open, but residents had to decide between having windows open and enduring the odour or closing the windows and putting up with the oppressive heat. Representations have been made again and again to the Railway Department, hut they are like Micawber: they will wait, for an outbreak of typhoid or some other epidemic to turn up, then they might awake from their sleep I trust the health officer or the Borough Council will move in the direction of having this nuisance removed. —I am, etc., RESIDENT.
