The defection of Oration and Melissa left a quartette of brililant. short distance .performers to contest the 13th Taranaki Stakes. The event attracted good investments, but Reremoana wound up a good favourite from Grand Knight, while The Hawk and Silvermine attracted £290 and £330 less than the favourite. The. tapes rose to a beautiful start, there- tteing nothing to lose over the first 30 yards. Silvermine then forged ahead, while The Hawk came into second place, just ahead of Rere v moana, w r ith Grand Knight two lengths in the rear. This order was maintained right to the home turn, though Grand Knight had drawn close. The Hawk was then bidding for supremacy, and: a neck to neck dash for half the length of the straight resulted in the last named getting the decision by a head from Silvermine, with Reremoana two lengths away, a neck behind Grand Knight, whose final effort involved a wide detour about 100 yards front the post/when a dog shot across the track.
