SCHOOL PICNIC.

* PLEASANT OUTING. It was a very happy crowd that the special train engaged for the combined school picnic at New Plymouth yesterday brought back to Hawera at a quarter past eight last evening. Although many of the little ones were showing signs of sleepiness, all were contented and enthusiastic over the gorgeous time spent on the sands of Moturoa beach. The official figure of the number o, picnickers carried on the train was 1038, which was a slight increase over the number attending last year’s event. Mr J. W. Harding, chairman of tho Hawera /Main School Committee, told a Star reporter that the picnic had been very successful in every way. 'Hie members of the railway staff concerned with the running of the train had been most courteous, special reference being made to Guard Loader. Those who had assisted on the beach had proved willing helpers, and among thorn Messrs C. J. Rowe, C. IT. Brough, J. Winks. J. Champion. P. Banks and L. IT. Carrel were entitled to special mention. Some indication of the preparations of the committee could he gained from the fact that 20 cases of fruit and 401 b -of sweets had been provided. On arrival at _ the bench tlio children had been permitted to do as they flensed, the majority indulging for the greater part of the in surf bathing.
