AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
PRELIMINARY WORK TO PROCEED. COUNCIL’S STATEMENT. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., Feb. 11. It is officially announced 'in a communication to "the Mayor (Mr F. J. Nathan) from the Hon. Geo. Fowlds (chairman of the newly-formed Council of the New Zealand College of Agriculture) that that body has unanimously decided to proceed with its preliminary plans and preparations.of a scheme for the organisation of a • fullyequipped agricultural college on the Palmerston North site. A few days ago the College Council came to Palmerston North to inspect the Batchelor estate, which has been purchased by the Government, and the McHardy property, which the municipality agreed to purchase for £IO,OOO as an addition to the college site, subject to a university, in the fullest sense, being established here. The brief announcement of the result of the deliberations of the College Council upon its return to Wellington were published subsequently, but the full text of the resolutions will not be made known pending their reference to the Minister. Mr Fowlds forwards the following statement of the College Council’s views:’ “That this College Council understands: (1) That it has been constituted under the Agricultural College Act, 1926, for the purpose of organising an agricultural college as provided for in the said Act upon a site at Palmerston North, purchased by the Government for that purpose; (2) that pending the ensuing session of Parliament the council will be limited in its work of organising a fully-equipped agricultural college to an expenditure which comes within the statement made in Parliament by the Prime Minister at the time of the passing of the Act; (3) that the Government must naturally decide whether any proposed capital expenditure by the council comes within the Prime Minister’s statement; (4) that subject to the limitations referred to in clause 2, the council resolves to proceed with its preliminary plans and the preparations of a scheme for the organisation of a fullyequipped agricultural college on the Palmerston North site; (5) that the council disclaims any desire to interfere in any way with the work or status of Lincoln College, and declares its willingness to confer at the earliest posible. moment with the governors of the said college. to ensure the fullest measure of co-operation and to prevent undue overlapping.”
