AN ACTOR’S OFFENCE. (Hi VtCLKQiiAi-H FKKHS ASSOCIATION < WELLINGTON, Eeb. 10. George Desylla Zucco, an actor, Anus to-daA- before the Chief Justice, and AA'a.s found guilty of indecent exposure. The jury recommended leniency on account of war disabilities. He will be sentenced to-morrow. i JURY FAILS TO AGREE. PALMERSTON N., Eeb. 9. The jury failed to agree in the case in Avhich John Drummond was charged Avith negligently driving a ear on the Woodville-Pahiatu-a road on November 13 so as to cause the death of a youth named George Vinton. A neAV trial was ordered, to eventuate at the May sessions of the Supreme Court. Drummond, Avho Avas admitted to bail, is 73 years of age, and is a Avell-knoAvn resident of Dannevirke,
SERIOUS CHARGE ALLEGED. AUCKLAND, Feb. 10. At the Police Court a young man, lan Lockland ShaAv. was charged AA r ith assaulting a young woman Avith intent to commit a crime. It is alleged that the offence took place after a dance at Mount Somers, on January 29. The police stated that accused said too much drink had been responsible. ShaAv pleaded not guilty, and reserved his defence. He Avas committed for trial, bail being alloAA-ed at self £250 and two similar sureties.
WOMAN CHARGED WITH FOR TUNE TELLING.
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 10. Mabel Jennings appeared in the Police Court- on two charges of having undertaken to tell fortunes. Mr Stacey, for defendant, pleaded not guilty. He said defendant was in poor circumstances, having- .been deserted by her husband. The evidence of two police matrons was that they had visited defendant’s house and had had readings. One was told of places- in the new .year, with some hints about a dark man and a blue limousine, and was told also that she would marry next year. After hearing the . evidence, Mr Stacey withdrew the plea of not guilty. Defendant -was fined £2. A MOTORIST ACQUITTED. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 10. James Ludeman Matthews- (Mr Thomas) pleaded not guilty to a charge of recklessly driving a motor vehicle, • causing the death of Ivy Louisa Boon. Accused’s car collided with a motor van in which Mrs Boon was travelling. It -was alleged that accused’s car failed to negotioate a corner properly, and that this was due to travelling too fast. Witnesses for the Crown assessed his speed at 40 to 50 miles per hour. Accused in evidence denied that he was travelling at an excessive speed. He was certainly not travelling at 40 miles per hour, and, at the corner, had reduced his speed to IS miles. Prisoner was found not guilty, the ."jury adding a rider that the corner where the accident occurred was highly dangerous. A MEAN THEFT. OHRISTGHUR-CH, Feb. 10. Cecil John Edmonds, aged 20, was charged in the Police Court with the theft at Waikouaiti of £l4 13s, the property of Matthew George Young and another. Edmonds came to New Zealand as an immigrant under the public school boys’ scheme. He had worked on a farm, but there met with an accident, fracturing! three ribs. Thereafter lie- had to seek lighter work, being employed by a cleaning company at a side-show at the exhibition, and as a salesman. When he was down and out, Young, befriended him and took him into his lodgings. When there Edmonds committed the theft. The Magistrate said the theft was a mean one. He convicted Edmonds and ordered him to come up for sentence when called on. He would have to remain in -the Salvation Army Home for three months and refund the stolen money. YOUTH CHARGED WITH THEFT. ROTORUA, Feb. 11. A youth named Frank Lockhart Crawford, a cadet employed by the Rotorua Tourist Department, was charged -with the theft of £62 14s lid, the property of the Government, at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. He was remanded for eight days.
