At the Supreme Court, John James o’Hanlon, who was found guilty of negligent) driving of a car, resulting in the ueath of a passenger named Bernard Hosiaux, was fined £25 and costs. His license was cancelled, and he was disqualified from obtaining another for two years. ACQUITTED ON GROUNDS OF ' INSONITY. DUNEDIN, Fob. 8. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened this, morning. King Chong, aged 77, charged with the attempted murder of another Chinamain, was acquitted on the ground insanity. The men were inmates of a benevolent institution, and the accused stabbed his countryman on the face with a knife. The judge ordered the accused to be kept in custody until the. pleasure of the Minister of Justieo was known. YOUTH CHARGED WITH BURGLARY. AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. Herbert ■ Kilburn, _ aged 21, was charged at- tlio Police Court with breaking and entering, with intent to commit a crime, the premises of Putt Bros.. Svmonds street. Chief ‘Detective Cummings stated that the accused was caught about midnight. A suit and a. P air °* trousers were stolen from the shop, entrance to which was effected by forcing a strong iron bar from the window. . Constable MacLennan. while patrolling* on his heat, observed the, youth in "'the yt of opening the window with a iemnvy. The accused scaled a si'* feet' fence to the adjoining yard, ealliiur to some confederate for assistance, but without response. Tlie constable grappled with the accused and got his handcuffs on him. The accused was remanded for a week on £l5O bail. ________
