The man, whose name is not available, but who is a labourer employed by Henry Conrad, of Menzie’s Bay, was in three feet of water when "a shark, ten feet long, bit him on the Hugh, lacerating it badjy before beingbeaten off. The siiark failed to secure a proper hold. The man, while trying to push the monster off with his hands, had both of them cut by the shark’s teeth. He succeeded in beating the shark off and got out of the water. He was taken to the homestead of the Menzies, where he received attention, and he may yet have to go to hospital. Menzie’s Bay is open to the sea, with deep water close inshore, and is a place where sharks might be expect-, ed. It is known that sharks are numerous this .summer round the peninsula and in Lyttelton harbour, but this is the ‘first occasion on which a bather has been attacked. YOUNG MAN MISSING. WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. George Anderson, aged 22, a native of Australia, who was engaged in doing fencing work on Horokiwi Hill, Petone, disappeared from the whare he was occupying about a week ago and has not been found. It is reported that he came into Wellington, but returned to liis whare and changed into his (Working clothes, pfresum;sbJy to start work again A suit of clothes and other belongings are still in the whare. Anderson had a mate named Petherick, but the latter, during Anderson’s absence, left a note in the whare stating that he was giving up his job and would not return. The police are endeavouring to obtain information from Petherick, but at present do not know where he is. JOCKEY DIES OF INJURIES. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 8. N. C. Dwyer, an apprentice jockey, who was injured at the Tapanui race meeting on February 2, died to-night at the Tapanui Hospital.
