CORRESPONDENCE.

MOKOIA RIDING RATEPAYERS’

MEETING,

(To the Editor.) Sir, —With reference to the report of the county council’s discussion regarding the resolution sent from the above meeting I, as chairman of the proceedings, would like to point out a few of the mistaken impressions formed at the council’s meeting. At the commencement of our meeting I stated plainly that the object of the discussion would be the proper maintenance of the present tarred roads and improved methods for metal dumps. So far as I can remember there was no suggestion that concrete dumps should be erected. There are other ways in which the council could arrange for more economy in dumping the metal without very much expense, but the ratepayers have n q apology to offer regarding their statement that much of the metal is lost for tarring purposes by the present method. An ex-councillor in the person of Mr G. J. Hawken expressed to the meeting that he was with it in asking for more economical methods of dumping the metal, and also for timeous treatment in tarring operations. The meeting also quite understood that all the rates could not he expended on the roads, but they are justified iu requesting that the roads should be maintained. In conclusion I am pleased to see the council, at their meeting, passed a resolution of continued confidence in their engineer; the ratepayers never questioned the efficiency of that officer. In fact, in my opening remarks to the meeting I said we had no grievance against any individual councillor or member of the staff, fully realising that the policy oiV •the council as a whole had to be ear* f ried out. The ratepayers, very largely®* represented, put their request to the council. That body has turned it down and that is the end of the matter so far as lam concerned. I am, etc., D. S. RICHARDSON. Mokoia. February 7, 1927. ALL BRITISH TELEPHONES. (To the Editor) Sir, —I have noticed with much, satisfaction the published fact that Hawera has an All-British telephone system. It would, however, he interesting to have an explanation as to how it comes about that our business telephone bears the label: ‘ ‘Automatic Telephones Inc., Chicago, HI., TJ.S.A.” I am, etg., INTERESTED.
