RAILWAY MERGER.
GRIOAT AMERICAN .SCHEME. CAPITAL OF i;s^y,(XiU,ooo. James J. Hill, who built the Great Northern Railway, has been dead many years, but his dream' of a huge railway empire, under one control, throughout the American northern and western States, was almost realised to-day, when a meeting of the presidents of the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Burlington lines took place. The C'hicago-M ilwaukee load, the sale of which for £B,O<)O,(KK) at a recent auction has just been confirmed by the Courts, will probably lie included. A new corporation, the largest in tho history of railroading, with a capital of JCBOG.CO: ;,OC<>, is being formed. If the Government- allows the merger, the company will spend millions in tremendous development schemes, intended to open up vast gieat western farm-ing-a ml forest lands.
