The importance of the flax industry to the Manawatu district is generally recognised (says the Manawatu Daily Times), but just how large that industry is, and the value of its production as an economic factor to Palmerston North, is perhaps not bo generally! understood in terms of pounds, shillings, and pence, which, after all, is the" ultimate gauge of value in this direction. “The jiresent time,” a prominent local miller explained, “shows what he termed a renaissance of the flax industry throughout New Zealand, and this naturally affects the local situation. In the Manawatu there are now more mills operating than at any time during the past five years, over 700 men being employed in the industry. The estimated production for the present year from all- mills will be 9000 tons, of an estimated value of I £300,000. '
