HIGH SPEED
OVER 174 MILES PER HOUR.
WORLD’S RECORD BROKEN. TRIUMPH FOR BRUTISH CAR. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 11.15 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Feb. 4. Air. Malcolm Campbell, in the racer “Blue Bird,” smashed the world’s speed record at Pendine Sands. His mean average speed was in excess of 174 miles per hour. The times were: A kilometre, 12.791 seconds, or 174.843 miles per hour; a mile, 20.663 seconds, or 174.224 miles per hour. Campbell’s achievement was a magnificent triumph for British motoring. The “Blue Bird” is British entirely, while the car in which Parry Thomas made the previous record had an American engine. When finished, Campbell had almost to be lifted from his car. The terrific wind pressure blew off his goggles. He said that the flag posts flashed by as if they were just a blur.
