HAWKE CUP

TARANAKI WINS MATCH. BY SEVEN WICKETS. DETAILS OF TO-DAY’S PLAY. (By Telegraph.) (From Our Own Reporter.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 4. The weather conditions were again ideal for the resumption of the Hawke Cup match at New Plymouth to-day. The wicket was- fairly good and fast, and play opened attractively. J. Scholium and L. Thompson,_ the not out men, continued their innings, Giblin opening the- bowling from the south end. His first over was a maiden, but off Bottrill, who bowled the second over, Scholium scored freely, getting seven, including a, nice carpet drive from a full toss. Thompson got two singles, and his paruner got a pretty off drive from Giblm. The score mounted steadily by singles, and 30 soon appeared, of which 20 were scored by Scholium. Play steadied down, both bowlers being well on the- wicket. At 34 Cole relieved- Giblm, olt whose three overs seven had been scored. The change- was very effective, for off his sixth ball Grayson took Thompson close in at “silly leg. 35—3—3. . _ Continuing the innings, Robertson joined J. Scholium, who was playing nice cricket. -Clarke took up the trundling from Bottrill, and off his second ball Scholium glided him to fine leg for four. In the next over, off Cole, Robertson poked up a stupid shot to Brown at mid-off and retired for a duck. 39 —-4 —o. Crombie j dined J. Scholium, and snicked a two through the slips, followed by a lucky single off Clarke. Cole, with his second ball, scattered Coonrbe’s stumps. The ball was a good length one that, kept low. 43— '5 —4. _ F. Bennett, came In and opened with two .prettv shots square with the wickets —a." two and a single. A. few balls later -Clarke, who was Fowling well, yorked Scholium. It was the first time the batsman had tried to taken anv. liberty with' that bowler. 47—G—27. ' M. Guthrie came next, and two balls later, in trying a close run Bennett was run out by smart work by Nasmith and Kingston. 47 —7—3. Cooke succeeded: Bennett, and without addition to the score Guthrie cocked one from Cole to mid-on, and Nasmith, coming across smartly, took a brilliant catch. 478 —0. Three- wickets had fallen without addition to the score. Moody came next, and byes and a single to Cooke brought up 50. Nice 100- glides by Moodv and a single by Cooke, off Cole, kept the score mounting, but the borvling was too good to take liberties with. _ Sixty appeared, the partnership making the best stand of the innings. Four byes were run, and Cooke pulled Clarke for a couple and a three. Similar shots to the on and a straight drive by Aloody brought on 70. Then with a ball that was a perfect length, but slower in pace, Cole completely beat Aroody. He had helped Cooke in a serviceable stand. 72—9—0.

Cave, the last man, played only three, balls, and Cole lowered his middle stump, and the innings closed for 72.

With 85 to get to .win, Lash and Brown opened to the bowling of Bennett and/Lockett. Lash got a couple off -the former, and Brown slammed the first ball of Lockett’s to the square leg. boundary, following it up with a single. Lash placed the same bowler beautifully through the slips for a couple. The first ball of Bennett’s second over Brown poked at, missed, and was clean bowled by a bailer. 91 —5.

Nasmith took his place, and a single off Bennett brought up 10. Robertson took Lockett’s place at the south end, and Lash got him neatly away to leg for four, and past point for a single. A luckv snick 'brought Lash to ten a few balls later. Lash cocked one up high to mid-on, and Robertson, running •hack and across, took a good catch. ]<) —2 —12. Grayson filled tlie breach, and without further addition to the score Bennett scattered Grayson’s stujnps with a ball that broke from the off and kept low. 19—3—0.

Kingston came next, and turned one from Bennett to short leg for a single. Each got one to the on, and then Kingston, with a nice two and a pretty off drive, brought on 30. Ho made his score 11 with a pretty leg glance. At luncheon the score was 32 for three wickets. Taranaki, in the second innings, made 92 for the loss of three wickets, and won the match. Kingston, not out 57 Total for three wickets 92 Cole had howled wonderfully well. His perfect- length, with a certain amount of work, was responsible for the downfall of several good batsmen, while the had spot at tlie north end helped him by making others “cock up” halls badly. Tie got seven for 20, which, even with the wicket helping him, was a fine performance, and gave him easily the best average of the match. Clarke also bowled well, but his pace off the ground made the ball bump over the wickets.
