SWIMMERS IN ACTION.
HAWERA CLUB ’ C FIXTURE CARNIVAL CONCLUDED. The two-night carnival conducted un dcr the auspices of the Hawera Amateur Swimming Club was concluded under ideal conditions last evening in the presence of a big gathering of spectators, who taxed the seating accommodation of the baths enclosure to full capacity. *As on the first night honours in the various events were keenly contested, interest being sustained throughout the programme, and the club officials are to be commended upon the presentation of a carnival which should add greatly to the popularity of the sport in the district. Among the visiting competitors were .a .party ut eight from Wanganui, including the intermediate girl champion over 100 and 220 vards and senior 100 yards champion,’' Miss Natalie Stratton, who in the 75 yards ladies’ handicap ceded Miss Phvllis 'Brant three seconds, but secured* the honours in an exciting finish. Opunake and Stratford were also represented among the competitors. On the conclusion of the programme the visitors were the guests of the club at supper at the Golden Minim. The officials last evening were as follow: —Referee, Mr W. A. Spragg. Judges —Messrs W. A. Spragg, G. Millars and L. Marter (swimming), W. A. Spragg and G. Millars (diving). Timekeepers, Messrs H. A. Brunette, Taylor and T. Lay; handicappers, Mrs L. Higgs and Mr M. C. Brown; starter, Mr A. Sagar; check starter, Mr F. Fodcn; call stewards, Mrs W. H. Brant and Messrs R. D. Barron and T. Dowdlo.
The results were as follow: Beginners’ race, girls under 1.2.Bettv Brant (3soc.s) 1, Bonnie McAneny (2sees) 2, Alison Watts (scr) 3. This event carried the special award of a silver medal, donated by Mrs E. Higgs, who also presented 'a bathing cap "to each of the seven competitors. 220 yards men’s inter-club handicap. —H. Gowan (lOsees) 1, A. Spragg (IS sec) 2, R, Sage (22sec) 3. Also started: G. Harrison (12sec), J. Loader (22scc), C. Dowdle (22scc). ' Dowdle drew away from the other limit, man at the start and maintained his lead until 20 yards from home, when lie retired just as Gowan and Spragg drew level. Gowan’s final spurt gave him the decision by two yards from Spragg, with Sage 20 yards back third. Time, 3.11. 50 yards maiden handicap, men. — First heat: P. Julian (scr) 1, J. Insull (lsec) 2. Loader was first to finish, with a loot to spare from Woods, but the. former was disqualified for starting before his time. Woods finished two feet ahead of Davenport, who was a yard ahead of the third man.
