MATAPU.

HARVEST. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Hay crops aie ail gattieied in, ana ah are in good condition. They have been exceptionally heavy. oeconu ciops or lucerne nave been cut, and made -into hay. ‘Sme first crop has been made into ensilage. There -has been a very, heavy mixture of cowgrass and clover, both with the hay and -the lucerne. The rain we had on Tuesday and Wednesday was very welcome, and. has done an immense amount of good. It was most beneficial to the autumn -root- crops. Although -some more rain would be welcome, we are truly thankful for what we had. In some cases the turnips have got the club-root, but X understand! from old farmers that it is not nearly' so bad as some years- ago. Th-S-re are some -splendid stands or mangolds and carlots this season, which will be a. great store for winter feed.

'through having so much dry and hob weather our roads have suffered a -great deal. The metal is very Joo-se, and tlie tarred .surface- in -places is no more. Potholes have to be dodged with the heavy waggons and milk carts, to -say nothing of the -speedy motorists.

Our local -school will, be opening again on Monday next. X understand that the new headmaster will not be present for some time. Most of the children are looking forward to .school aga-in.

It is very gratifying to know that the price -of produce is keeping up, -and the market- is steady. It is hoped, in some quarters, that the farmers will have a- -surplus pay-out on the ,20th. It has been a long and weary w-aat, but we trust that patience- will be rewarded. The milk supply is on the downward scale, some factories having cut out one or two v-at-s. but it is pleasing to know that the quality is very good. Tlie -tests -are -showing an upward tendency, being on thle average two or three points higher than this time last season..

Ai great number of the local residents had a day-out to the beach last Sunday. Tlio-se who were -able to .stay late in the evening, had the- good fortune to- catch -several -sohn-a-ppe-r.
