At Chicago, Aliss Sybil Bauer, the holder of all the world’s back-stroke swimming records for women, died in a hospital to-day, following a three months’ illness. HAWERA CARNIVAL HANDICAPS DECLARED. Irrespective of the post entry events, which will probably attract keen competition, approximately 70 entries have been received for the first night’s programme of the swimming carnival to he held in the Albion street baths on AVednesday and Thursday evenings under the auspices of the Hawera Amateur Swimming Club, while nominations already received for the second, night’s events indicate that the competitions on that night will be even more -strongly supported. The carnival organisation is being attended to by a competent committee under the direction of the honorary secretary (Air J. H. Davenport), the members of which may be depended upon to ensure the presentation of the events in a manner which will sustain interest from the opening to the close of the respective programmes, while to cater for tlie convenience of oot-h the swimmers and the spectators the appointments of the baths have received the efficient attention of the custodian (Air J. Dowdle). Always, apopular event in the recreational life of the community, the first carnival of this season should sustain worthily its excellent reputation. The handicaps for the first night were declared this morning by Mrs E. Higgs and Air Al. Brown in. the ladies’ and men’s events respectively as follows: LADIES’ EVENTS.
