HAWERA YOUTH INJURED.

.. fr— — UNCONSCIOUS ON HIGHWAY. FOUND NEAR TE ROTI. In an unconscious condition and with one foot Sjtili gripped in the pedal strap of a racing bicycle, Ray Campi, 17 years of age, son of Mr and Mrs I. G. Campi, of Hawera, was found lying on the side of the Mountain Road near Te Roti on Saturday night. * The discovery was made at about ten o’clock by Mr F. W./Ashman, a visitor to Eltham, who was returning by car to tiiat -town from Hawera. Xil rer spouse to restorative measures applied by Mr Ashman, the youth revived partially and informed his rescuer that he was employed by Mr H. Death, of Pukengahu, out lapsed into semiconsciousness before he could give further information as to his identity Of the manner -in Avhich he had sustained the mishap. He was. taken by Mr Ashman to Eltham, Avhere he received medical attention, ana Constable Townsend established his identity by communicating with Mr Death. Dr. Saunders found the youth to be suffering from concussion, though he had received no other apparent injury, and ordered his removal to the Hawera Hospital, whence he was conveyed immediately by Mr Ashman. It was reported at the hospital today that he was making satisfactory progress, but had not. sufficiently recovered to make a statement.

The spot where Campi was found was on a straight piece of road about half a mile on the Eltham side of the Te Roti factory and no traces of a collision were evident. With the exception of a broken lamp the bicycle was not damaged and it would appear that through striking a stone, or coming suddenly on to the loose earth bordering the tarred roadivay, he got into difficulties with the machine with a resultant fall. Earlier in the evening he had visited his home at Hawera, and he was evidently returning to Pukengahu when the accident occurred.
