WF.EST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS

The West Coast Centre amateur athletic championships commenced on Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui, at two o’clock to-day. The weather was splendid. The following clubs tyere represented: Hawera, Pa tea, Wanganui, Wanganui Pirates, New Plymouth. A team of 20 went down from Hawera by motor. The results were as follows: Three .Mile Walk. —D. Wills (Hw) 1, •T. Broad (Wg) 2. Won by a lap. No time taken. Wills and Broad were the only starters. The Hawera boy led by 20 yards at the end of the first lap. This he had increased to half a lap at the end of the third round. Wills turn, ed out in the pink of condition. Wills’s walking is made for .speed. He showed that he is a natural performer. In the course of a few early laps his knees called passing attention from the judges, but for the most part his movement was above reproach. W'ith littre over half the distance gone, he had caught a lap on Broad. They took turns in pacing for the next mile. This did Wills no good. The race was already his, but be naturally fell into the stride of his fellow competitor, and the rythm of his walking went. High Jump Championship.— A. Gilliver (Hw) sft sin 1, N. Ball (Pirates) and A. Newell (Hw) sft 4in) tie 2. 100 Yards Championship.—First heat: C. aMitland (Wg) 1, N. Ball (Pirates) 2: Time, 102-ssec. Second h'eat. H. Newton (Wg) 1, N. Good-son (Hw) 2; time 101-ssec. Third beat: J. S. Medley (N.P.) 1. N. Wellington (Wg) 2; time 10 4-ssec.
