MOTOR - CYCLING
FIXTURES. Feb. 12.—Auckland motor cycle sports, at Takapuna. Feb. 16.—Hawera motor cycle sports. F.b. 19. —New Plymouth motor cycie •sports. NOTES. Air. W. J. Claringbold attended the Manawatu 'Alotor Cycle Club’s race meeting held last Saturday. He reports that all the “cracks” have intimated their intention of attending the Hawera club’s meeting on February 16. An attractive programme has been arranged for this meeting and the excellent prize money offering should induce large entries. The Lightweight Championship of New Zealand —an eight mile race — was decided at Ashhurst on Satiirday last, C. Goodwin, mounted on a 2-;‘ O.E.C. securing the title. His machine is a novelty in the Dominion and is built by the Osborne Engineering Company, Limited, of England. It is expected that the machine and rider will be seen in action at the Hawera club’s meeeting. The Aliddleweight Championship of New Zealand will be decided at New Plymouth on the occasion of that club’s meeting on February 20. It is expected that the event wili provide a good race especially between Aloller (Norton), Herbert (Indian), and Morrison (P.and M.). The Manawatu Club had a new scoring board in use at its meeting on Saturday. The board, works on the clock system, but has the disadvantage that the spectator has to watch all of the clocks. The Hawera Club’s board can be easily .followed, as the spectator, by glancing down the board, can pick up at a glance the leading rider. Aloller liad a fall in the last race at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Ashhurst on Saturday. Apart from being severely shaken he did not sustain'injury and it is understood he will be recovered .sufficiently to compete at tho Hawera Club’s meeting.
Percy Coleman is riding an eight valve 'Harley Davidson machine this year. Although he ,at one time, rode an eight valve Indian his new machine is said to be something exceptional and sensational speeds are exepected of him when he rides at Hawera. It is confidently expected that he will set a new world’s record at Takapuna. Aicßeady is now vising the machine previously ridden by Coieman and is reported to lie handling it well.
The’ motor cyclist who opens both “cut-out” and throttle and “lets her go” becomes less popular every day. In the northern end of the province he is especially unsympathetically met with, and at a recent meeting of the Automobile Association a resolution instructing the secretary to obtain information and broach the subject at the next meeting with a view to having the use of “cut-outs” made illegal was carried.
