ROYAL RACE MEETING. WHO SHALL CONTROL IT? CHRISTCHURCH DISPUTE CONTINUES. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION .) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan, 26. The -dispute -between the Christchurch Jockey Club and the New Brighton Trotting Club as to who shall hold the Royal race meeting continues. Mr Gould, president of the Christchurch Jockey Club, holds that his club represents,' the racing community of Christchurch, and declares that the Minister of Internal Affairs is making an error over the permit. The Trotting Club representatives refuse to compromise, and claim that they have been the first in the field. RECEPTION AT MELBOURNE. Received 2.10 p.m. to-day. MELBOURNE, Jan. 26. The Melbourne City Council has allotted £IO,OOO to cover the expenses of entertaining the Duke and Duchess of York, RENOWN AT PANAMA. PASSAGE THROUGH CANAL. Received 1.35 P.m. to-day. COLON, Jan. 25. H.M.S. Renown arrived at Colon at six o’clock this morning, and was es-rorte-d up the harbour by the battleship Arkansas, exchanging salutes. Daylight saw the entire fleet of aeroplanes from the Francefield aerodrome circling over the Renown in squadron formation, making an impressive welcome to American territory. No time was 'ost in entering the canal, and the Renown was within the dredged channel before sunrise. .Mr Braithwaite, British Minister, the •’Cal attache from Washington, the ■t/jtish consul, Mr Ford, boarded the -vessel while it wa-s in motion, and were received by a. guard of honour. Gatun lock was reached at 7.30 o'clock, the big battleship being handled most efficiently bv the American pilot. The .ship was held ’fon -some time at the lowest level on account of low tide, barely clearing the side*, while the necessity for waiting for -sufficient water at Balboa also operated iu the delay in the actual entering of the locks. At the first clock, Governor Walker, of Panama, 'General Martin, commanding the military district, Admiral Day, commanding the naval district, Admiral Lans, from the Arkansas, and their -staff, paid an official call.
The Duka received them with nil rcremonial on the quarter-deck. Thereafter the Iloval party left the .ship, and were received ashore my other dignitaries. The hand of the 14th Regiment- played the National Anthem. The Duke inspected the guard of honour. The party was then taken a short wav to see the Gatun spillway, which was specially turned on for their benefit. making a fine waterfall display. The paitv returned in time to board the Renown at the upner level dock, and proceeding across Gatun Lake.
