ALCOHOL FROM WASTE.
WORLD PATENT FOR BRITAIN LONDON, Dec. 19. The Daily New® understands that a British group has acquired the world’s patent righto for a new German process for manufacturing glucose and power alcohol from cellulose* materials of all kinds—such as .sawdust, waste paper (of which London alone could supply 80,000 ton® daily), rags, rice, straw, and husks. “It is not too much to say,’’ a member of the group, told the Daily News yesterday, that in ten years’ time alcohol fuel, thanks to the new process, will almost entirely displace petrol for all purposes. It will . not only be cheap, bub higher engine compression is to be obtained with it and, consequenty, more power. Also, of course, it is less dangerous than petrol, since, if it, ignites, the fire can be extinguished. with water.” The process is the invention of Professor Classen, who ha® long been recognised as a leading authority on alcohol production. A new plant, on a commercial scale, i® shortly to he erected in Ehgland.
