SOUTH ISLAND PRODUCE.

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. >2l

Produce is now commencing to come forward, but there is too big a spread between the growers’ and the merchants’ ideas to lead to much business. The free selling of wheat was continued on 'Wednesday, there being a fairly heavy disposal to merchants at 5s 6d on trucks. Samples of AJgerian and Garton oats have come to hand from Ashburton, and sales of Algerians have been made at 2s 3d to 2s 4d on trucks. Gartons are a particularly good sample, and are quoted at 2s 7d to 2s 8d on trucks.

Blight has made its appearance very early this year in some Canterbury districts. It is not of much severity so far, but may develop under the conditions prevailing. In the meantime the bulk of the potato crops are looking well. Quotations are £4 12s 6d to £4 15s f.0.b., sacks in, March to April, or £3 on trucks, at which price the farmers are not in the least bit disposed to sell. . Onions are quoted at £4 10s on trucks for March to April delivery. The crops look good, but blight has made its appearance to a small extent.
