AN AWKWARD SITUATION
RARE COIN LOST.

A curious incident which occurred at the British Museum many years ago is recalled by the recent theft of gold coins from the South Kensington Museum. , , A foreign visitor was inspecting anu handling a rare gold piece under the eye of an official. , The coin was apparently replaced, but on locking the case the official saw that the coin was missing. . A hunt ensued, but the com could not be found, and the visitor was told he would have to be searched. He protested vigorously, and things began to look unpleasant, when the official saw a gleam at the edge of the case. The coin had slipped down between the velvet lining and the edge of the frame. . , . Asked why he had objected to being searched, the visitor, a distinguished collector, produced from his pocket the only other known example, of the . coin. “What would you have said,” he asked, “if yon had found this in my possession?”
