DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP. RINK COMPETITION. WON BY BENEFIELD. ST. JOHN’S. (11V TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. One of the most thrilling finishes in the history of the contest resulted m Menefield (St. John’s, Wanganui) capturing the rinks championship at the Dominion bowling tournament to-day. The weather was brilliantly fine and the green extremely fast. Benefield’s rink met Stewart’s (Dunedin) rink in the final. Stewart, however, had two lives. In the first game Benefield had an easy victory by 20 to 10, but the next game, which followed almost immediately after, was ta much more stubborn contest. Stewart’s rink showed an all-iound improvement and led until the last head. At the end of the 13th head, Stewart led by 19 to 7, but never scored again. Slowly Benefield crept nearer and when the last head was played Stewart was only two up. Benefield was lying two on the last head when a shot "by Stewart gave Benefield three more, making the final score: Benefield 22, Stewart 19. The rinks were: McMillan, Rowling, Wight. Benefield (St. John’s); Gregory-, W. Smith. Bentley. Stewart (Dunedin). Other results are: PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Round. —Pilkington (Hamilton) 17 v. Benefield (St. John’s) 15. Third Round.—Walker (Auckland) 20 v. Pilkington 19. Semi-finals.—Walker 22 v. Proctor (Remuera) —• ; Bell (Hamilton) v. Harnaway (Green Island, Dunedin). G. Walker and Bell will meet in the semifinal to-morrow afternoon. SI N G LES OH AMP lONS HIP. Fourth Round. —Smellie (Green Island, Dunedin) 15 v. Walker (Auckland) 13; Bell (Hamilton) 19 v. Mclntyre (Hamilton) 15. Mclntyre still has one life. The draw for the semi-finals to-mor-row morning is: Bell v. Smellie; McIntyre v. Clarke (Rocky Nook, Auckland ). KAPONGA v. STRATFORD. In a three-rink banner match played at Kaponga on Thursday the visiting players scored a narrow margin win, the aggregate scores being 59—48. Following are the rink scores, Kaponga being mentioned first: Roberts, James, Hi.slip, Henderson 14 v. Sayers. Carman, Walters, Fragley 27; Williams, Law, Cran, Hawkins 17 a - . -Somerfield, McEvoy, Butcher, Hulbert 18; Bennie, Dawson, Tonkin, Payne 17 v. Howarth, Porritt, Patterson, A mess 14. A friendly game was also played by a rink from each of the foregoing clubs, Kaponga being represented by a team of “colts,” who acquitted themselves remarkably well against their seasoned opponents. The teams and scores (Kaponge being mentioned first) were: Pnseoe, Cutter. Ryan, Wilson 19 v. Dunbar, Kelly, Olsen, Reid 20. VISITORS TO HAWERA. At II o’clock this morning a further party of bowlers arrived in Haw era on their way to take part in the New Plymouth tournament. The travellers consisted of members of the Victoria Club, in Wellington. Arrangements have been made by Ha we r a bowlers for the entertainment of bowlers from other clubs passing through to New Plymouth.
