The railway engine “Josephine,” which drew the first- train from Port Chalmers to Dunedin and which attracted ,so much attention at the exhibition, has been presented to the Otago Early Settlers’ Association by the Otago Iron Rolling Mills Co. (Ltd.) of Green Island (says the Otago Daily Times). The ‘‘Josephine” arrived at Port Chalmers with a sister-engine, the “Rose,” in August, 1872, under the charge of Mr John Thomas, having both) ordered by Messrs Proudfoot, Oliver, and Ulph, the proprietors of the Dun-edin-Port Chalmers railway. The “Josephine” was erected at Port Chalmers, and drew the first train, a “goods,” from Port Chalmers to Dunedin on September 18 1872, arriving at a point near the Queen’s Gardens, with 'Mr Thomas as driver. The “Rose’’ was then prepared, and the line was officially opened on January 1, 1873. The Otago Iron Rolling Mills Company bought the “Josephine” from he Public Works Department, which was using it between Cromwell and Clyde shout 10 years ago. The company Set it to ho Railway Department for display dm-, inu- the exhibition. The engine is now being placed in the strip of garden between tile Early Settlers’ Hall and the -railway station. Recently the Japanese -newspaper Nielli Nielli Shimbun offered a world tour as the prize in an essay competition on the subject of “The Pacific “Fifty Years After.’’ The winner of that competition was Mr Talciji Mivoshi, and he arrived in Sydney recently bv the Tango Maru. lie expressed a desire to visit Australia, because Jap-, anese did not know as much about it as about others. A Sydney journal says that after leaving Australia lie will proceed to New Zealand, South J America, the United States, Europe, and India, studying industrial problems by the way. Mr Miyoshi is 30 years of age, and has taken a course in applied science at the Higher Polytechnic School in Tokio. He speaks little English.
