The Westland County Council yesterday celebrated its golden jubilee, when a jubilee dinner was held, _ attended by a representative gathering. The occasion wa.s taken to make a presentation of a gold albeit to the chairman, Mr. William Jeffries, the gold having been .secured during sluicing operations a.t Slip Hill. Lake Kaniera, where the side of the hill was sluiced away to prevent damage to the >' roading. JOINERY WORKS DESTROYED BY FIRE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 19. The joinery works of J. A. Simpson, a.t Greenlane Railway Station, together with the contents, were totnl’y destroyed by fire at 3 o’clock this morning. They were insured for £ISOO. VALUABLE (ITFT OF BOOKS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 19. A. valuable gift of between 500 and 600 volumes, chiefly works ol reference, has been made to the Dominion Observatory through the good offices of T)r. Connie, an ex-Auckland student, now deputy superintendent oi the British Almanac Office in London.
