(By “Maecenas.”) Some splendid racing should be witnessed at Trentham to-morrow, where the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting opens. The fields in six of the eight events will be contested by large numbers of good-class horses. If ridden by L. G. Morris the Tara-naki-owned Mint Leaf is certain to have a big following in the Trentham High-weight Handicap, but Outfit has got through such impressive track work at Trentham that he, too, is assured of strong support. Past history suggests that good two-year-olds are well nigh unbeatable under the conditions of the Wellington Stakes. In High Finance we have a youngster that has shown great brilliancy over a few furlongs, while many expect Silvermine to prove hard to dispose of. A number of very promising hacks figure in the Apprentices’ Plate, and several will be strongly supported. On actual public performances the race looks to he at'the mercy of the well-performed Stormy, but the Irishbred Aston is better than public performances suggest. Since returning from Australia, Count Cavour has won £3120. When in Australia Count Cavour was offered to an Australian sportsman at 1500 guineas. Lvsander is such a wonderfully brilliant colt that even under bis big weight he will fully extend the best of his opponents in the Wellington Stakes to-morrow.

Some smart youngsters null he seen in action in the Fitzhorbert Handicap. Of them Melissa., Panther, and Thaw all raced well enough at the recent Auckland meeting to induce backers to support them to-morrow. A 'omparatively small field will contest the Anniversary Handicap, for which event Rascal is certain to be well in the betting market, hut it may be found tTiat Decoy Bird will sururise many by running a better race than most of his opponents. No less J han twenty-four horses were accepted for in the Ruapehu Hack, and ipanv of these will pay their wav in better than “hack” class. Those who profess to know claim that Welkne is capable of winning “open” sprint races, .so. with 7.13 in the Ruapehu to-morrow, he should prove very dangerous.

A particularly good class of horses will compote for to-morrow’s Wellington Cup, and as is only to be expected under such conditions, the event bears a very open appearance, and one might mention half the field without naming the ultimate winner. In Rapine and Star Stranger. Mr. A. B. Williams owns a particularly dangerous pair, but in Te Monanui, Taranaki has a very worthy representative and the son of Rotoa can be relied on to wortlily uphold our province’s reputation. As usual, the Telegraph Handicap has drawn some splendid sprinters and whatever wins will return a useful divi'lend to those lucky enough to support it. Despite their heavy loads. Reremoana (9.12) and The Hawk (9.11) are assured of strong support, while Royal Damon’s splendid form over the holiday meetings entitles him to respect. High Pitch and Mimetic- at eight stone may prove a formidable pair, land of the light weights Paperchase is certain to have many admirers. Possibly High Pitch and Paperchase will be hardest.
