Clarke’s next over produced a single to Beuth and a possible chance to Eggleton at square-leg from Davis. The shot yielded a brace. Cole sent down a scries of beauties to Beuth, a single coming off the fifth and a leg-bye oil' the last. Beuth treated him with the utmost respect. Davis got a single olf Clarke’s fourth ball, and brought up ten after a quarter of an hour’s play. Davis put the wood on to an off ball by Cole, and fine fielding by Lash saved a certain four. Beuth got one to leg two balls fj.atoi. Another off-drive to Davis T|,vas nicely taken bv Lash, who earned applause from the terraces for excellent fielding. The scoring slowed down for a time, both bowlers keeping a good length til! Beuth glided Clarke to leg for three. Cole bowled two maidens, and singles and a bye brought on 20. Penny relieved Cole with the score at 23. and Eggleton took the ball, from Clark. Play was exceedingly slow till Davis hit out and drove Eggleton to the off boundary, following with an uppish snick over the slip’s head for a single and 30 event up shortly afterwards. Davis gave a very difficult chance to Lash, but it was almost impossible to get the ball. With the next ball Beuth was given out I.b.w, off Eggleton, but had hit the ball, arid Kingston brought him back. Nasmith then dropped Davis at point —an easy * chance off Penny—and again a very hard chance off the same bowler. He showed his gratitude by slamming Penny to the off boundary. In the next over Davis hit Eggleton to squareleg for thr.e, following it up with a drive past the bowler for a couple. Davis opened out and hit Penny to the canvas screen, and at 48 Cole took the ball with Eggleton at the north end. This steadied the scoring. Cole opened with, a maiden. Two single® off Penny brought 50 up, and Beuth then slammed a full toss to leg-boundary off him. The change was effective, for Cole got Davis off his pads. 55 —2—32. Fifty-three "had gone on during the partnership. Lowry was next, and opened with a single through the slips. Clarke took Penny’s place at the bowling crease, and after playing carefully for an over, pulled him cleverly on to the boundary,'and 60 appeared after an hour and 27 minutes’ play. Off his fifth, ball. Cole, with a trimmer, with an off-break, got Beuth’s stump. 64—3 —42. Worker came in next, and Cole cre- . ated a. sensation when, two balls later, he yorked the newcomer. 64 —4—o. Cole had bowled nine overs for eight runs and four wickets, and with three maidens. The New Zealand Cricket Council T received official advice this morning that the Melbourne Cricket Club team has accepted an invitation to tour the Dominion, and will leave hv the Moeraki for Bluff on January 26 or by the Marama for Auckland on January 28.
