Dinner was late again. Tins was the third time it had happened that week, and the. whole domestic machinery was thrown out of gear merely because Mary, the cook-general, would persist in gossiping over the garden wall instead of attending to her work. Mrs Nodder felt-she could stand it no longer. Next morning she went to the kitchen with a severe frown on her usually placid face. “Mary,” she said severely, “if this occurs again 1 shall be forced to get another servant.” Mary smiled brightly but meaningly. “I wish you would, mum,” she exclaimed, “there’s quite enough work for two of us, and well you know it!”
