“BEATS ALL OTHERS”
NEW ZEALAND AS SPORTING LAND. Much has been written of New Zealand by persons who have paid it the most cursory of visits, but that will not be the case with Dr. McLean lnglis, who will embody the impressions of a tour of the Pacific Islands in a book he is writing. A keen sportsman, he has shot and fished the world over from big game to button quail, and after a motor tour of the North Island, chiefly a fishing expedition, he is resting in Wellington before making for Russell for swordfish. The English visitor has taken part in expeditions in many lands, but he is firmly ol opinion that as a sporting country New Zealand “has them all beaten” for accessibility and variety of sport. He lias secured a stalking block in the Landsboro district of South West-land, and will thus bed able to write with knowledge of the New Zealand red deer. “I was told that I would not find New Zealand as interesting as itwas made out to be,” he told a Poet reporter, “but it is quite the other way. From the geological and botanical points of view alone it would he worth while. It is one oi the most wonderful countries 1 have ever visited. T have met a great many people away from the towns, and I must say that the help and kindness offered me might he well copied by some other British colonies. I am greatly impressed by the stealing work being done by farmers in the face of difficulties.' As for your trout fishing, it is unique.” Dr. lnglis has his own idea of what constitutes sporting tackle for big fish, and if he is successful at Russell it will be with lighter equipment than that of some other visitors. Altogether lie will spend jr.irw a year in tfie Dominion.
