NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Maecenas.”) The nominations for the coming meeting of the Wellington Racing Club reveal a good entry of horses owneo and trained in Taranaki, and witli luck on their .side a fail" share of prizemoney should come to the -‘butter-fat’ province. Commendation is undoubtedly a line three-year-old, and his withdrawal from the mile race (King’s Plate) on the opening day, and the race (Cl i fiord Plate) on the fourth day o. the recent Auckland meeting must be regretted, as either of these contests would have shown how good lie really is

After a hard campaign at Christmas, owners of good two-year-olds are loth to keep them in solid training. This no doubt accounts for the paucity o. horses in the rich AA'ellington Stakes, which has drawn only eight, amongst which are none of ou.r leading youngsters.

Judging by His good effort against good handicap horses at Ellerslie recently, Stormy is above hack class. He is engaged in hack events at the coming Wellington meeting, and is sure to prove troublesome in the richly endowed Do urn Cup (for hacks). That hack events are very hard to win on many occasions is shown by the fact that Royal Mint, Lady Anstruthcu and Tip Tree all met defeat in hack class fit New Plymouth, yet at the Sti afford meeting the trio named heat good-class handicap performers in the principal “open” races. When .'Monaghan wont out to contest the Malone Memorial at Stratford on Monday last lie was very lame, but after being riden in anything but a tinished_ manner he ran a good soc-ond to lately Ansfrutlier. More judiciously handled, the son of llisogne would certaiiTiy have given the winner more trouble.

After seeing To Kara race at the Waikato meeting in November, wt stated that bis standing up to a severe preparation was very problematical. He was a runner at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, but it is now given out that this once great performer went wrong in a ligament, and it is doubtful if ho will rare again. The Taranaki, owned and trained

Hilvormine appears amongst those paid up for in the Wellington Stake.'!, to he rim al Trcnthnni in a couple of weeks lime. Kilvennine lias won in 'each of two starts, and has undoubted pace, hill over a live-furlong course may nol vet lie good enough for the brilliant High Finance. Luck enters largely into the sport of racing, lie it the hick of owner, trainer or bettor, and there is little doubt that an ounce, of luck is many times better than a ton of judgment. Foremost amongst the unlucky trainers in this Dominion just now is the Papakura. mentor .1. T. Jamieson, who had a big team of eostly horses at the Auckland meeting, hut could not win a race. At the recent meeting of the Auckland Pacing Club, 'Rapine, Count favour, and Te Monanui all showed exceptionally good form, and the two first-named won some good stake money, luit Te Monanui was not rewarded as his good performances warranted. There is no doubt about To Monanui’s quality over a middle distance, and during the last couple of .seasons we have seen few better or more consistent performers. Owing to the weights for the Mar ton and Stratford meetings being declared

before the Manawatu and Taranaki meetings, it follows that should a performer suddenly develop form above his impost at the earlier gatherings his chances at the later meetings are extra good. At the Marton meeting Manawatu form worked out well. Koval Damon started twice at the recent, .Manauatii meeting and twice at the Marion meeting which followed, and won the whole lour events. Polar showed consistent form over iTo hoi id-*: meetings, winning at Manawatu meeting and then annexing a "double” at the Marton meeting. Mint beat did not run as well at the recent meeting at Ellerslie as many anticipated. His form was not as good as that shown at the spring meeting on the same course. Commendation won the Great Northern Derby in hollow fashion, and his time (2.34) was good; hut the fact that Lysnnder only just heat Alloway for second place would suggest that Commendation’s opponents were hardly up to Derby class With the holiday race meetings over, the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, to be held a couple of weeks hence, will be the first gathering to occupy the attention of racegoers in this part of the Dominion. Prior to the meetings, the most optimistic officials of the Taranaki and Stratford Clubs expected a big drop over the receipts of the meetings recently held by those dubs, but, contrary to expectations, the meetings were much better than anticipated from every point of view.
