UNEMPLOYMENT
BLACK OUTLOOK IN DUNEDIN Once again Dunedin is threatened by the menace of unemployment and the outlook at the present time is a good deal blacker than it was at this time last vear, states an exchange. The Labour Department forwarded returns to Wellington on January 3, there then, being 57 men on 'the unemployed register, of whom 39 were labourers. The position lias since been accentuated by the facLthat the Public Works Department has paid off a number of men on the Portobello road works, and of these some thirty have registered with the Labour Department, there now being 87 names on the books.-, No cases of distress have come under the notice of the Labour Department’s officials*, who, however, regard the prospect as being far from reassuring. Little work is offering, and though a certain proportion of men may be absorbed by farm operations in the country, the position at present is such as to lead one to believe that unless some drastic measures are adopted the unemployment situation will be even graver this winter than was the case last vear.
