MAN WHO TOOK FIVE AUSTRALIAN WICKETS FOR NONE.

A. Dick Pougher, the old Leicestershire bowler, died recently at his home in Leicester. It was in 1888, on the old Ayistone road ground adjoining his residence, that he and H. T. Arnali-Thompson had most to do with the defeat of the Australians by 20 runs. Pougher took four wickets for 31 runs in the first innings and six for 40 in the second. Leicestershire was the first defeat the Australians had suffered during that tour. Even more remarkable, however, than this was his performance in 1896, when, playing for the M.C.C. against the Australians, he was mainly responsible for getting rid of them for 18, the smallest total ever made by an Australian team in Britain. Pougher was put on to bowl when three wickets bad fallen for 18, and he took five wickets without having a run- hit from him. The innings closed on the fall of the ninth wicekt, George Giffen being absent owing to illness. The M.C.C. won by an innings and 18 runs, and so took revenge from the Australians in 1878, when the M.C.C. were got rid of for 19.
