CONTROL OF CHILDREN

♦ VALUE OF A JOYOUS HOME. PROFESSION OF PARENTHOOD. <!» GAbHi-PRffiSa ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT LONDON, Jan. 4. The Educational Conference listened with rapt attention to Dr. C. W. Kinimines, chief inspector of the Education Department or the London County Council, when he laid down the axiom that the management of children was immensely important, and that there should be perfect harmony in the home in early child-life. He did not know of a nervous breakdown occurring in after-life when a- boy had had a joyous home. The child should be encouraged to laugh and develop a sense of humour. If children’s dreams were interpreted judiciously, a tremendous amount of information could be gleaned of their chief wishes and their unfulfilled wishes. It was impossible to estimate the evil resulting from over-mothering children, who, under this treatment, ceased to be independent creatures. Dr. Kimmines said he had been engaged latterly on the fascinating study of hen-pecked husbands. He found, in every case, that they had been “mother’s darlings,” and had lost the power of looking after themselves. “The world,” said the lecturer, “wants a recognised profession of parenthood. Anybody can commit matrimony and enter into the profession of parenthood. This must all be altered. People will have to produce a suitable certificate, showing that they are physically and mentally capable for such a profession.”
