BUTTER IN CANADA

TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA DUMPING DUTIES IMPOSED TO MAINTAIN PRICE LEVEL. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT. Received 9.40 a.m. to-day. OTTAWA, Jan. 4. The Rt. Hon. S. M. Bruce, upon his arrival at Toronto, was immediately taken to Government House, where he will be a guest. until he leaves for Hamilton to-morrow. A deegation, headed by Mr J. L. McLean, representing the provision . interests of the city, has asked to meet Mr Bruce to discuss the butter situation. Local dea'ers point out that under the Patterson scheme Australian butter could enter here five to six cents below the price of the Ontario product, amd this resulted in dumping duties, which virtually stopped the importation of Australian butter. It'is understood that it will be pointed out that the Patterson .scheme is not State aid for butter producers, but a private arrangement by the provision interests. It is felt that unless Australian butter comes to Canada unaided, whether privately or by the Government, that the local producers, and particularly those in Ontario, which are producing 25 million pounds annually, will, in order to maintain the level of prices, succeed in keeping the dumping duties in force, and that- the provision .interests will import butter from countries other than Australia. ■
