BUTTER FOR EXPORT
SEEKING NEW MARKETS THE NFAY YORK EXPERIMENT. Earlier in the week me >star pubiioheu a, cable message from New York, stating that nineteen hundred thousand, pounds of New .Zealand butter, including a direct shipment to New loiK, arrived in December, and sold readily, it wa« of the highest quality. Interviewed on the subject, a local dairyman said: “That is- the butter the New Zealand Dairy Control Board sum to America. The price it was .sold at is not known, but it- is understood to bo equal to at least Is 4d per lb f.o.b. “This outlet assisted in clearing the accumulated stocks ot blitter, and the report of its .ready .sale, and good quality, is extremely gratifying. Heads of the industry consider that New Zealand should be developing other markets for its rapidly increasing butter output, and the cabled report of sales in New York indicates possibilities m t hi.direction. “The export of butter from New Zealand to Canada- and the United States in past years has at times been a profitable business in the hands of private exporters. The U.iS.A. Government imposed a protective tariff, which checked the export. However, it is not surprising to find that the Dairy Board, having at its command large quantities of butter, has been able to take advantage of a favourable market, and make profitable shipments to America, in spite of ‘■the protective tariff. “Of course,” continued the gentleman interviewed, “the price at which such sales should he made must always lie a matter of judgment, for nobody can say with certainty what the ultimate price on the London market will he. This is where the Dairy Board should he able to assist the producers. It knows the stocks held and due to arrive on the London market, and is in a position, therefore, to judge the quantities which can be absorbed. No private exporter hn-s been in such a favourable position.”
