Ongley and family, of Feilding, who nave been staying for some days at tile Central Hotei, returned south yesterday. Messi’s- R. McDonald and 11. It. Taylor, audit o.ffieers of the Bank of New South Wales, have arrived in Hawera. They will he here for some days, and are quartered at the Central Hotel. Captain and Mi?. Norman, of the Salvation Army local corps, left Eltham this morning for Onehunga, their new appointment. Adjutant and Mrs Campion. the new officers for Eltham, arrive next week to take charge. Miss E. Yoogiht, a Hawera girl, who has been -studying at College, lia.s received word of her success in economics in her final lor the B.A. degree. Mr S. Smart, of Timaru. and former! v -of Hawera, is at present on a visit here. Mr. Smart was for some years foreman of the Hawera h ire Brigade, and was an interested visitor at the station this morning. Mr. T .A. Winks left Hawera by the express last evening for New Plymouth He in enSroute to Auckland, where lie will attend a meeting of the Nation's-.-Dairy Association. Mr. Winks expects to be back in Hlawera at- the end of the week. The Hon. O'. J. Hawken. Minister of Agriculture, was in H-awem yesterday. This morning he paid a visit to Ma-n-aia and C-ouwake and iis to proceed to Wanganui this -afternoon. Senio-r-SergeanT Fitzpatrick, of the Gisborne police force, who was formerly .stationed on the West Coast, is at present on a holiday visit to- Hawera. Among the holiday travellers this morning was Mr. J. A. Ralgetty. who left on a, couple of weeks visit to th: capital. Decent visitors to Hawera. who stayed at the White Hart Hotel included: Messrs H. Bush, J. Brennan and A. Chapman (Thames); Mr and Mrs C. Bigmal] and family (Wanganui); Mr and Mrs J. Lewi? (Palmerston North) ; Mi and Mrs A. Healy and family (Feilding). A Press Association message from Dunedin this morning reports the death of Sir John Boss at the age of 92. He was the founder of the firm of Boss and Glendining, and was born at. Caithness, Scotland. He came to New Zealand in 1861. His benefactions during his lifetime included £20.000 to the Presbyterian Church’s Knox College and £SOOO to the Boss Home, which was named after him. Widespread regret will be felt at t-h----death in New Plymouth pi Mrs Foo-kes. afire of Or. FI. F. Fooites. after a short ill ness. Blood poisoning, following on a -scratched hand, necessitated the amputat:on of one-arm. but despite aLi that medical skill could do she died on Monday. Mrs. Fookes was the second daughter of the late Gap tain and Mrs. Clapel, old residents of Taranaki, a was* greatly beloved by many friend because of her gentle and kindly disposition. A party of tourists from the United States- of America arrived in Hawera yesterday in two cars. They carried the Stars and Stripes on the bonnets. They arrived in New Zealand about a fortnight ago and engaged two cans and chauffeurs for a comprehensive two months’ tour of both islands. The visitors stated that a most enjoyable time was being spent. The party consisted of: Mr and Mrs Adler, the Misses Adler: Mr and Mrs Giallagher; and Mr and Mrs C. H. Aldridge, of Wellington. friend-? of the visitors from overseas. The travellers stayed at the Commercial Hotel last night, and proceeded on their way to Waitomo this morning. The -scientific world has suffered a distinct- loss bj’ the death at Wadraa of Mr. J. T. Ward, of Wanganui. Mr. Ward had l for many years been an butstanding authority on astronomy, his work having been recognised bv leading societies all over the world. He had been honorary director of the Wanganui Observatory for some years: and had done much to forward the cause of astronomy in that town and in the Dominion. Besides being an acknowledged authority on the science, he was a technical expert and had l built a number of very fine telescopes, including those, of Mr. P. O’Dea and Mr. Townsend. of Hawera. Some months ago he came to Hawera to open the lather’s observatory and gave much help -n the formation of the society here. His death, after only a. few months retirement from business, will he deeply "egietted. not only bv scientific men. but also by many friends- in Hawera and on t-he coast, who- appreciated him "or his k-ndlv disposition and his sterling worth.
