HOLE IN HIGH STREET.

SERVICE CAR BREAKS CRUST. Unsuspecting danger lurking in High Street was revealed at 1.30 this afternoon. A heavy service car was passing along the crown of the road between the junctions of Union and Regent Streets with High Street. Passersbv heard a heavy bump, and it was seen that a wheel of the\motor had broken through the crust of the bitumen* An inspect’on of the hole revealed the possibility of a serious cave-in. There was a hissing of water, as from a broken pipe. The water seems gradually to have eaten away a large cavity, leaving a thin crust above it. The necessary precautions were taken at once. The borough engineer put labour on the job, to ascertain the extent of, and effect repairs to, the cavity under the road.
