HUNTER VALLEY AFFECTED. FARM LANDS SUBMERGED - EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Dec. 29. The rain has ceased, but the weather is -still showery. The whole State is soaked. Floods in the Newcastle district submerged a large area of grass and cultivated lauds, doing heavy damage. The waters are now reported to be subsiding BRISBANE, Dec. 20. Bountiful rains have fallen over a large part of the State. Farmers and pastoralists are jubilant at the breakup of the drought conditions. A thunderstorm visited Brisbane, with a deluge of rain, which flooded the low-lying suburbs, the water invading many houses. Received 10.20 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, Dec. 30. Although the floods have subsided at Newcastle and at Cessnock and the people are able to return to their homes, additional heavy rains on the central coast districts caused serious floods in the. Hunter valley, where the river overflowed its banks, submerging farm lands and rich lucerne flats.The damage is very extensive. The rains will greatly benefit the primary! industries. Most of the harvest had 1 already been taken off before the rain fell, while the present condition of the soil will enable wheatgrowers to commence fallowing. The damage to standing crops is negligible.
